Links from popular directories are very helpful to your search engine ranking, as they are counted more heavily than regular links.

The top directories are Open Directory Project and Yahoo Directory.

To submit a site in Open Directory Project (DMOZ), you first need to find the appropriate category for your site to be listed in, and submit your site under that category. An editor will review your site and places it in the DMOZ directory if the site's content is of good quality. This is the most important directory to be on, as, among other things, Google is using it as Google Directory.

Yahoo Directory offers Yahoo's Business Express program, or use the free URL submission functionality. Business Express incurs approximately a one time fee of $299 plus a $299 annual recurring fee. Based on the necessity and affordability we can choose the right category under Business Express program.

  General Submission

In addition to directories, there are often several well-known Directories and Search Engines serving specific area which we should submit our client sites. These Directories and search engines will have a human editor come visit your site before they decide to add our sites, while others automatically take our submission.

Finally...

We do not submit to all directories and make sure none of our submission will get in to a link farm. We always submit to directories that preferably have some industry reputation, use a human editor, and have a site that is pleasant to navigate.
